OUR PHILOSOPHY
We provide learning opportunities where students can gain knowledge, develop integrity and acquire the ethics, spiritual values and professionalism needed to become independent researchers in the advancement of science for the benefit of humanity and service to God.
OUR MISSION
It is our mission to provide our students with strong foundation in biological sciences through quality undergraduate instruction, experimental and field instructional experiences which will foster student inquiry into science and prepare them for postgraduate pursuits.
OUR OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are highly valued in support of our mission to:
-
create a learning environment that encourages self-reliance, intellectual challenge, and mutually high academic expectations
-
foster the development of sound theoretical, integrative, ethical principles towards a broad based biological science with health emphasis
-
emphasize laboratory and field studies that offer fundamental and unique educational experience
-
foster next generation of biological researchers, educators and scientific workforce and contribute to significant scholarly activities in the biological sciences through robust and evidence-based researches
-
develop skill acquisition and application of modern biotechnological advances in complex health related problems
-
generate environmental biological issues and awareness for the care and keep of the environment akin to the Garden of Eden
GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS INTO THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
Students seeking admission into the program must satisfy the minimum university requirements for admission to the degree program which includes acceptable pass at the university screening test. They must, in addition, have a minimum of five credit level passes in WAEC or its equivalent in five subjects, at not more than two sittings, which include English language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Transfer students from recognized institutions by the National Commission on Higher Education, seeking admission into the biology program must satisfy the minimum University requirements which include WAEC certificate with pass in five subjects, at not more than two sittings.
REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION
The program will run for eight semesters providing instructions by structured course system and experimental practice. There shall be four levels of courses numbered 100-199, 200-299, 300-399, 400-499 with the courses prefixed with the letters BIOL. A minimum of 150 credits are needed for graduation. The core courses are prefixed BIOL, BCHM, PHYS, CHEM, ZOOL, BOTA, MBIO, STAT. Every student is expected to graduate with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.50 and to achieve this at least a B-grade is expected in all the core courses.
